BOUGAINVILLEA TEA

Purple bougainvillea tea infusion is an amazing remedy for a cough, but it’s fairly unknown in the United States. This floral brew originates in Mexico, and is much more common there than in the states, but if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on one like I was…take care of it. This is a special plant,
and brewing a few of these flowers in your tea pot can help prevent a bad cold or knock out one you’re already dealing with.

The flowers used in this tea are not the typical red bougainvillea flowers we’re accustomed to in the U.S. ….these have a
darker purple shade. If you look at the photo below you can see the difference. Now, both are edible but the purple version
is specifically for colds. I have have no information suggesting the red variety can aid in reduction of cold or flu symptoms.
It is ONLY the purple variety.

If you want to brew some of this floral home remedy for yourself…you will need the following-

  • 10-12 bougainvillea blooms
  • 1 liter of water
  • 2 TBSP of honey or unrefined sugar
  • 1 stick of cinnamon OR 1 small chunk of ginger (for flavor)

Boil the water, add cinnamon or ginger….turn down and allow t simmer for 10 minutes, then take off heat and steep the
flowers in the water until the color is drained completely the plant. Remove solids and add honey, and enjoy!

*Ginger is an anti-inflammatory so it’s a good addition to this tea to aid in couch and cold relief, the flavoring is
is just an added bonus. I suggest adding cinnamon or ginger because the tea itself has an unusual flavor. Thats not

to say it tastes bad, it doesn’t….it’s just unusual and can use something to boost its mild unique taste.
